title: Turning Toward Eden

author: Ann N

category: fiction • subcategory: youngadult • date submitted: 5.11.2023 • author id: NeAnTu10023

word count: 80352

Content

“Maybe you aren’t chasing her so much as running from yourself.” What was that supposed to mean? Hollis might be 14-year-old Eden’s only friend, a lanky boy her Mama calls her “beau,” but he could try the patience of a saint. Eden has been in a tailspin, that much is true—crash-landing in a Podunk beach town when her disabled younger brother comes home from the institution and her father walks out. Stuck with tending to Dex while Mama struggles to make ends meet, Eden takes refuge in religion, at least on Sundays. On Fridays, she sneaks down to Cap’s Diner to play poker with the grizzled fishermen. And every day in between, she ditches Dex duty to pier fish with Hollis. It hasn't been easy, a Texas girl wrenched from bayous and sweet tea, adrift in Pacific swells and ninth-grade snubs. But it’s summer now, and the family of locals she’s cobbled together isn’t half bad. Then the crimes begin—petty at first but escalating to a killing on the beach. Eden is sure the Soviet girl is behind them, a recent immigrant bullied for her garish clothes and elusive ways. Rumor is that the “Commie” transforms into a raven at night, raining curses on the town in revenge. Though Hollis cautions against the gossip, he has to admit the girl is a mystery. Determined to discover the truth, Eden embarks on a reckless game of chase, even if it means risking her brother’s life. Seeking Raven’s secret, she unearths her own. But will it be too late to save her brother? A coming-of-age story set against a summer of intrigue in 1971 California

About the Author
Cate Touryan (pen name) is the author of short stories, creative nonfiction, and novels. She holds an MA in English and a JD (law) and works as freelance developmental and copy editor as well as a university and government writing instructor. Her childhood aspiration to turn straw into gold fizzled as she realized how steep the cost—trading in her firstborn. So she did a more socially acceptable thing. Realizing it wasn’t the magic in story but the magic of story, she began to write. When not writing, she enjoys anything that will give her a view but keeps her feet on the ground and video chats with her two daughters as much as possible, who—perhaps fearing she might indeed trade them—live in a time zone 9 hours ahead. Cate lives on the central coast of California with her husband, her Yorkie, and a rafter of turkeys—as in both a whole bunch of them and in the rafters. She has yet to turn them into story, but when she does, she's hoping for gold.

title: Easter for Quakers: New Light on Conviction, Convincement, and Conversion

author: Thomas G

category: nonfiction • subcategory: theology • date submitted: 5.10.2023 • author id: GaThEa9923

word count: 70000

Content

Rooted in a fresh examination of the biblical witness and the experience of early Friends, as well as insights from Rene Girard’s mimetic theory (“the scapegoat mechanism,” “non-violent atonement”), this book offers a new and practical perspective on the traditional “Quaker praxis” of conviction, convincement, and conversion.  Conviction is the visceral realization that the world is not as it should be, and that we are complicit in that reality.  Convincement is the life-altering experience of “an unseen order,” the “infinite ocean of light and love,” that is behind and above the dis-order of the world, coupled with the belief that this unseen order can transform the world as it presently is.  Conversion is the lifelong project of moving from a self-centered to a God-centered way of life, requiring vision, discernment, courage, humility, prayer, and the support of one’s spiritual community.  Out of a radical and contemporary reinterpretation of the meaning of Easter within the larger biblical narrative, this new understanding can lead us back to our Quaker roots, renewing our commitment to attend to the movement of the Spirit through the still-relevant experiences of conviction, convincement, and conversion.

title: Evil Necessitates The Existence Of God

author: Robert P

category: nonfiction • subcategory: academic • date submitted: 5.10.2023 • author id: PrRoEv9723

word count: 17500

Content

It is one thing to contemplate the philosophy of evil from the scholastic halls of academia or the comfort of one's living room couch; it is another matter entirely to experience it first-hand and face-to-face, and suffer a ferocious tempest deep within one's soul. In the latter case, one may undergo a crisis of faith and be tempted to follow the advice of Job’s 'friends'; he may be tempted to 'curse God and die'. Evil has vexed philosophers and the church for Millenia, representing the most significant challenge for both Christianity and the existence of God,  inevitably becoming the "nuclear option" for atheists to argue against the existence of God. However, is it possible that evil actually presents a powerful argument for the very existence of God? Can the existence of evil be used, in the words of Anselm, "to shatter the rigid resistance of unbelievers"? In fact, evil logically necessitates the existence of God and the argument that is most often raised against the existence of God, backfires.

title: His Power, Our Weakness ~ Encouragement for the Biblical Counselor

author: Beth B

category: nonfiction • subcategory: spiritualgrowth • date submitted: 5.2.2023 • author id: BaBeHi8923

word count: 52502

Content

With refreshing and raw honesty, Beth Ann Baus pulls back the curtain on her own personal experience as a Biblical Counselor and guides other counselors toward more effective servanthood. Weaving the biblical narrative of Moses and the Israelites wandering in the desert into each chapter, she deftly compares their trials and tribulations to those of any modern-day ministry leader. Just as Moses led the people of God, even while they grumbled and complained, those leading in various capacities in ministry leadership need to be reminded that Jesus is the savior, not us. Ministry leaders are just as tempted to grumble and complain about God's imperfect people. The author gives practical and biblical counsel on how to deal with unmet expectations, spiritual warfare, burnout, feelings of failure, the temptation to gossip, and more. Each chapter includes a section called "What's in your toolbox?," which includes Scriptures to equip counselors to counsel more biblically. The "Encouragement" section offers pointed truths and reminders from the Bible as a whole on how God works both in the counselor and counselee. In the last section on "Personal Reflection," the counselor is guided through introspection to examine his or her own heart in practical application

About the Author
Beth Ann Baus is a certified biblical counselor, a writer for Crosswalk.com, and the author of two novels. She has personal connections with the director of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, the director of resources for Faith Church LaFayette, both of whom choose resources for their bookstores, and the director of a large counseling training center who has expressed interest in having this book in the care package given to all trainees.

author: Katie L

category: nonfiction • subcategory: familyissues • date submitted: 4.24.2023 • author id: LeKaMy8623

word count: 85445

Content

(Working Title: My Father the Narcissist) I was puzzled by my father’s contradictions, his Jekyll and Hyde antics. For thirty plus years, I tolerated his craziness. Then my husband and I did something crazy – we invited Dad to live with us. Ninety and in failing health, he needed us in his last years, or so we thought. After a year together, God pulled back the curtain, revealing Dad as a narcissist with a whopping eight of the nine tell-tale characteristics. Even though I was sixty, that realization came as a blow. My father was a pathological narcissist; he had never loved me, never loved anyone. After the Big Reveal, life with Dad went from bad to worse. He moved out and returned to his rathole apartment far away. There he tried to hook up with two women who were previous members of his ever-changing fan club. Finally, Dad made a series of shockingly poor decisions in his last months and died without a word to me. To process my grief and bitterness with the goal of arriving at forgiveness, I began to write as therapy, reliving  weird, crazy, laughable, disturbing moments with my father, the narcissist.

title: Such a Task: Staying the Course in Missions and Ministry

author: Alan G

category: nonfiction • subcategory: missions • date submitted: 4.19.2023 • author id: GoAlSu7223

word count: 42600

Content

There are few things I have found more heart-rending over three decades of mission work than seeing a fellow laborer gradually lose steam. I watch as a defeatism grows from the hardships, then a questioning of whether this work is the best fit. Devotional time with the Lord grows cold. Gradually, vision starts to erode and there are worries over whether it’s too late to switch into another career. “Is this it? It used to be more fun before my friends left. Maybe if I had as good a leader as that person on that other team…” Then the dooming thought lodges, maybe God didn’t call me to this after all… Such a Task is an examination of aspects of “apostolic ministry,” the ministry of being “sent ones” in missions, church planting, and other forms of vocational ministry. It takes its name from the centerpiece scripture 2 Corinthians 2:14-16, “Who is equal to such a task?” The purpose is to clarify and strengthen the reader’s understanding of calling to result in greater longevity in the work. The approach of the book is to meditate on characteristics of apostolic ministry as taught by Paul in 2 Corinthians. Paul’s defense and explanation of his ministry is one of the main themes of the epistle; each chapter in Such a Task examines a different characteristic he raises.

About the Author
Alan Goddard has served as a missionary with Campus Crusade for Christ/Cru for 35 years. He cut his teeth as a campus minister in the USA before pouring out 15 years of his life in East Asia, serving first as a campus team leader then as a regional director overseeing ministries in five provinces. Since returning to the US in 2011, he has directed the Cru ministry at the University of Georgia. While overseas, he had the distinct privilege of seeing his role indigenize, not once, but twice in less than 11 years, such was the speed of the revival in China at the time. Alan has traveled widely throughout China and India establishing missionary partnerships and coaching teams, and has visited or served in 21 countries. He is largely fluent in Mandarin Chinese and is the only missionary he knows who has been hit by a dump truck (see chapter 2). Since 2001 his responsibilities have included serving on the design and leadership team for Cru’s training for new overseas missionaries called “XTrack.” This training has been a passion of his for over twenty years. He has personally coached scores of new missionary candidates while being tasked with developing the Biblical and devotional component of the training, which largely gave rise to this book. Alan holds Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (B.S.E.E) from Georgia Tech and a Masters of Arts in Biblical Studies (M.A.B.S.) from Reformed Theological Seminary.

title: JAMES, Brother and Bishop

author: Lois C

category: fiction • subcategory: biblical • date submitted: 4.12.2023 • author id: CaLoJA7023

word count: 105000

Content

What manner of man was James, brother of Jesus? What do you know about an important person who is mentioned less than a dozen times in Scripture, yet is pivotal in the life of the early church? This biblical novel gives personality to James and at the same time remains true to Scripture.  A walk with James, as the head of the church in Jerusalem to the martyred end of his life, allows a colorful and faithful look at his personality and character. A fictional family of his own draws the reader into James’s daily life and struggles, both with the problems of the fledgling church and his own, for which he seeks answers.  Amusing and heartwarming events of his adoptive family open a window into the life and heart of James and his desire for all believers to live the Christian life as he had set forth in his epistle.  The story illuminates the warm, generous, and loving character of James that is only hinted at in that letter. How did James’s legacy of love and obedience affect the life of the early church and the family he has acquired, and how will that legacy affect you?

About the Author
Lois Caldwell is the mother of five grown children and holds degrees in both education and psychology, having a counseling practice for over 35 years.  This is her second book; the first, Journey to God’s Heart, was recently put back in publication.  She has traveled to 37 countries, fifteen while co-leading mission teams with her clergy husband.  She has led retreats internationally and in Pennsylvania, where she teaches Bible studies and Bible discussion groups.

title: The Eternity Focused Life: Squeezing the [Eternal] Life out of Life

author: John H

category: nonfiction • subcategory: spiritualgrowth • date submitted: 4.10.2023 • author id: HaJoTh6423

word count: 45000

Content

“Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”  In these words, Jesus unabashedly offers the invitation to every believer to squeeze eternal treasures out of this life, treasures that will be enjoyed for all eternity.   In The Eternity Focused Life, the author explores biblical insights into a coherent lifestyle in which the pursuit of eternal treasures fits into the daily activities and pressures of life. Believers need to expand their vision to encompass eternity.  That vision is established on one’s God-appointed purpose in this life and an awareness of the God-placed opportunities in their life journey for securing His promised rewards.  In the context of daily life, the author explores how believers can use the resources God has provided to make an eternal impact for the kingdom in this life and store up treasures in the next.  With a preview of what life will be like in eternity and what "treasures" await them in heaven, the author arrives at the core message of the book; practical insights and wisdom on how to use their spiritual giftedness, their work life, and their financial resources to prepare for a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

About the Author
A graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary (1985), John Hargrave has insights both from the perspective of serving as a church pastor as well as working in a secular job.  He relates well to the challenges facing believers as they seek to navigate life as a committed follower of Christ.  The proposed book is the product of 30+ years of his ministry of discipleship, and is targeted toward believers seeking to make an impact for Christ but struggling to understand their role.  The author will use the Dallas Seminary network to promote the book, as well as pastors, Christian workers and his network of individuals he has discipled scattered across the country.

title: They Call Me "Reverend Amble"

author: Gary H

category: fiction • subcategory: historical • date submitted: 4.7.2023 • author id: HaGaTh6523

word count: 48000

Content

Yes, it’s true.  The little village of Amble, Michigan – is named after me. A Scandinavian immigrant from Norway. A pioneer preacher. A bachelor. I can hardly believe it. I was one of many Scandinavian settlers that came to America in the 1800s looking for a new life. Norwegians, Danes, and Swedes came to homestead in this land that reminded them of the pine forests and fjords back home, but also gave the opportunity for lower costs of living and greater freedoms. For me, it was a matter of ministry. I sought a place in which to happily serve God – and He granted me that desire of my heart. Abundantly. After coming to America in 1871 and attending seminary, it was not long before I moved to Michigan where I planted and pastored up to seven churches at the same time. Altogether, I was the spiritual shepherd of over 1,000 souls. That was something I never could have imagined.  And I did this faithfully for more than 53 years. Tragedies, tornados and changing times did their best to stop me. But by God’s grace, none of these succeeded. I retired happily in 1927. This account is a journey through my experiences.

Gary L. Hauck was nominated for the Gold Medallion Book Award and is the author of twenty books and numerous articles. He served as a pastor, chaplain, professor, short-term missionary to China, Russia, Ecuador, and Uganda, and as the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Montcalm Community College. He earned the BRE and ThB degrees from Clarks Summit University, a ThM from Dallas Theological Seminary and a PhD from Michigan State University. Hauck is a frequent speaker in conferences, schools, and churches.

Sarah Anne could never foresee how God would use what she thought was the catastrophe of her life. Little would she know when she ran for her life through the forest outside of Wilmington, what an adventure awaited her, as a vessel in God´s hand during the great revival of Azusa Street in the year 1906. By the age of seven, Sarah Anne is picked up from an orphanage by a wealthy family, with whom she grows up. At her eighteenth birthday party, she accidentally overhears about a murder, committed by one of Mr. Banning´s employees. She is now a dangerous witness, and falsely accused of theft, she flees and finds shelter in the home of Abigail and Onslow Cole. From there, her journey continues to Los Angeles, and we follow her enthralling calling by insight into what is simultaneously happening in the spiritual dimension as God makes way for one of the greatest revivals in history. Through this novel, we follow Sarah as she experiences the supernatural events that occurred during the revival, as she gets to know William Seymour, Ruth and Richard Asberry, and others who were actively serving God during those days.

About the Author
Annelie Anttila is a licensed Swedish high school teacher and author, teaching English and Swedish. Azusa is her first novel in a series of three which will be published by a Christian Publisher in Sweden in June 2023. Her first book was published in 2021, a partly autobiographical book about the restoration and healing that is to be found in the relationship with Jesus. Historical research when writing Azusa: Th.D. in Church History Torbjörn Aronsson´s Pentecostalism. Frank Bartleman´s Azusa Street and other historical articles and books. Having the novel published in the USA would reach a broader market than in Sweden, as the revival on Azusa Street is well-known among Christian Americans and Americans in general. It also appeals to readers who enjoy exciting Christian novels based on authentic historical facts.

During the 48 hours following his crucifixion, these women and others who were among his followers, gather at a cottage in Jerusalem's lower city, seeking comfort or reassurance, or simply someone else who shares their grief. (working title: Prayer Through Pictures: Helping Children of All Abilities Pray and Seek God) As parents, we do our best to train a child in the way they should go. We teach them manners, responsibility, and most importantly, we teach them about God. For most parents, we teach them by modeling and taking our children to church and Sunday School. We teach them to pray, by having them memorize the words to simple familiar prayers. Wouldn’t it be nice to help ensure that your child understands the meaning of those words they are saying to God? That’s what Prayer Through Pictures is designed to do.  As a special education teacher, and mother of two, Danielle McManus has worked to create a way to make prayer more accessible for children. Young children learn to attach meaning to words by labeling the pictures and visuals in the world around them. Activities in our Christian lives, like prayer, should be no exception.

About the Author
Danielle McManus holds a master’s degree in early childhood unified education. She has been an early childhood special education teacher for the last twelve years. Danielle is also the mother of two children on the autism spectrum. Danielle is well connected in the disability community with access to large foundations and groups within this niche market such as the autism society. Danielle is also a leadership partner of the children’s ministry at Hope Church RVA that has thousands of members and family friends with the pastor of another large Church in Petersburg with thousands of members. This book is easily marketed to Christian parents, churches, and church-based daycares and preschools.

title: Adam's Search for a Partner: A High-Contrast Board Book

author: Natalia E

category: nonfiction • subcategory: children • date submitted: 2.10.2023 • author id: EmNaAd1023

word count: 52

Content

Adam is looking for a partner in the Garden of Eden. As he names each animal God created, he considers their personality and what traits he’ll need in a partner. Alas, no animal is suitable: Hedgehog? Too prickly. Quail? Too showy. Water buffalo? Too grumpy. Adam keeps searching and searching. Until God creates a perfect partner.   Illustrating Genesis 2:20, this book vividly depicts the animals using high-contrast, engaging drawings. High-contrast images are appealing to babies’ developing eyes. The illustrations and lyrical text thus appeal to even the youngest of children, helping them witness the range of God’s creative endeavors and the incredible value of a helpmeet.   Since Adam’s search is based on the animals’ values and traits, the book implicitly introduces children to the crucial notion that Psalms 31:10 articulates: a virtuous and capable character is more precious than rubies.

About the Author
Natalia has an economics PhD from Harvard, and works on initiatives to prevent child maltreatment. Natalia has been producing and sharing visual art since she was 16, but only began writing and illustrating children’s books when she became a mother in 2019. In 2013, she and her husband founded a prayer group that is still going strong.   PJ Library, which distributes books to Jewish children, has expressed interest in securing a 20,000-copy run of this book. Natalia is involved with several faith-based parenting groups, the members of which would happily promote the book on their mom-blogs.

Amid worldwide upheaval, believers and non-believers alike are asking profound questions. That's what happens when something or someone you have depended on for guidance, structure, community, comfort, identity, and meaning has been exposed to the light, shaken to the core, and found to be unreliable and untrustworthy. Whether you are a believer in Jesus, a faith deconstructor, a seeker, a skeptic, or an opponent, What is Church? will inform and help resolve your longing for answers, truth, meaning, and belonging while plumbing the depths of divinely revealed knowledge. Drawing on a wealth of relationships, personal experience, study, travel, stories, and a deep love for Jesus and His Church, Dub Karriker shares valuable insights on the Church from a different perspective, revealing the Church's place in history, the present and the future.
