ContentBankruptcy of the Spirit is a coming-of-age story against a backdrop of inherited trauma. The inherited trauma is a result of years of institutional racism enforced by Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws, first learned by the author’s surviving ancestors and then passed on from one generation to the next. These Codes and Laws are not “dead.” And, in some states, these laws are still on the books. They manifest themselves in a variety of 21st century ways: unadjudicated police shootings of unarmed American males of African descent, derogatory characterizations of Americans of African descent and their culture, the cradle to prison trajectory for American males of African descent, etc. The story pivots on how one African American female overcame this psychological murder through cultural and spiritual maturity. The transformative qualities of this manuscript suggest that racism is not overcome solely by law and regulation (behavioral change) but also must include a change in the spiritual arc of Americans---Americans of all descents. Disparity and inhumane treatment of Americans of African descent and other marginalized people will continue without this added component.

ContentIn recent years, the subject of perseverance and apostasy has drawn a renewed attention as believers have wrestled with issues of justification and assurance of salvation. To make an in-depth study of perseverance and apostasy in the New Testament, I apply the grammatical-historical method in the exegesis of relevant passages against the socio-historical circumstance of each community of the New Testament, dealing with questions such as whether genuine believers can apostatize and lose their salvation, whether apostates can be restored with repentance, how God’s sovereignty and human responsibility work together to result in either perseverance or apostasy, and whether the New Testament writers maintain unity or disunity on the subject. From my inductive study based on biblical-theological and exegetical methods of interpretation, I find that the New Testament writers maintain a uniform concept of apostasy since they address a common belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God incarnated in the flesh. Apostasy is different from backsliding and defection in that it is a calculated rejection of the gospel of Jesus Christ; so apostates, as the book of Hebrews affirms, cannot be restored. Also, genuine believers are preserved by God through His Spirit unto salvation, so biblical warnings and exhortations are designed to realize the elect’s perseverance rather than suppose a possibility of their loss of salvation through apostasy. My book sets out to affirm the unity in the New Testament over perseverance and apostasy and invalidate viewpoints that challenge the authority and authenticity of the Scripture.

ContentFor centuries, biblical scholars and archaeologists alike have longed for historical proof to verify the most important story in Jewish history: the 430-year Israelite sojourn (Exod 12:40) in Egypt and the exodus. Evidence of Hebrew residence in this land has been so elusive that such a discovery often is viewed as stumbling on biblical archaeology’s holy grail. Egyptologist James Hoffmeier once wrote that as for the Israelite sojourn and exodus, no clearly identifiable support has come to light in Egypt until now. Ironically, few scholars have engaged in any serious pursuit of potential evidence. The opposite is true for the research behind the present work. This volume claims to present—for the first time in history—the groundbreaking discovery of interconnecting archaeological, epigraphical, and iconographical evidence that attests to the presence of Israelites in Egypt from 1876–1446 BC, the exact period required by biblical chronology for their inhabitation there as foreigners. This evidence is vital to the book’s title, because as James Hoffmeier stated correctly in 2014, one of ancient Israel’s creeds (Deut 26:5–8) emphasizes the sojourn and exodus from Egypt as foundational to Israel’s origins as a people. They reject a version of Christianity they perceive as intellectually unacceptable, morally objectionable, and spiritually deadening. There are better ways to understand Christianity, but considering alternatives involves a willingness to rethink cherished assumptions. This book provides guidance about doing the kind of rethinking that is needed. Here are a few examples: We can’t view the Bible as a message directly from God. Divine revelation comes to us in the form of writings that are shaped by cultural views of different times and places. Portrayals of God as wrathful and demanding punishment should be rejected in the light of the fuller revelation in Jesus. We need to replace the idea of salvation as a transaction to gain admission to heaven with an understanding of it as a fulfillment God seeks for all people. Rather than viewing the Christian message as primarily about life after death, we need to see that Jesus’s mission was focused on transforming life on earth. In contrast to a message that validates our social position and privileges, we should recognize that Jesus calls for a community organized on principles that challenge norms our culture takes for granted.
